Hi! I’m Maggie Adams, a bestselling romantic suspense author. My first book in the Tempered Steel Series, Whistlin’ Dixie, debuted in Amazon’s Top 100 for Women’s Fiction, humor, on November, 2014 and then again at #61 in 2016. I have consistently made the Amazon bestseller 5-star list with Leather and Lace, Something’s Gotta Give, Love, Marriage & Mayhem, and Forged in Fire. My series has launched my hometown of Grafton, Illinois, into International recognition with sales in Mexico, Ireland, Scotland, Australia and the UK.
I enjoy writing about ordinary people overcoming their personal demons, to find love in the most unexpected circumstances. My novels are romantic, but, like life, they include humor, crisis’s and lots of graphic sex. My Tempered Steel Series focuses on seven brothers, and like the brothers, my books are as different as their personalities. So, I invite you now to take a peek, and…
Meet the Coalsons –
A few years ago, the tiny village of Grafton, Illinois, nestled along the banks of the mighty Mississippi River, was completely destroyed by flood. Rather than pull up stakes and move elsewhere, many of the residents vowed to rebuild their hometown, making it bigger and better than ever. One of these residents was Mac Coalson. The eldest son of Hank and Ginny Coalson, Mac, together with his parents and his six brothers, set about the arduous task of clearing, cleaning, and repairing what could be saved.
What no one expected, was that not everyone was happy to be rebuilding the town. When vandals strike the new construction, it’s up to Mac and his brothers to catch the culprit before anyone is hurt. While laying a trap, Mac thought he had captured the criminal, but instead, he finds sassy spitfire, Dixie Harris, has stolen his heart. But when the vandal turns to arson, it may be too late to save his brothers.
When Sam Coalson, ex-Navy SEAL, heard about the troubles in his hometown, he decides to head back to Grafton, despite being run off fifteen years ago, by the father of his high school sweetheart. He can’t forgive Angel Devereaux for her part in his humiliation, but he can and will find out who is behind the destruction of the new buildings. But what he finds leads them all into a sinister plot to run drugs through their tiny town and it’s up to Angel to save him from certain death.
Charming Chance Coalson helps his brother run their construction business with a ready smile and a strong back. Considered the “Casanova of the County”, his love for women is legendary. But he’s recently realized that his heart belongs to shy volunteer firefighter, Georgia Haines. Now, he must prove to her that this “bad boy” has become a one-woman man, and he must do it before she becomes a target for a killer.
With only a small clue to the whereabouts of the arsonist, Lawrence “Lucky” Coalson heads to Las Vegas. While posing as a bouncer, Lucky finds himself ensnared by the lovely bartender, Claudia. But, like Lucky, she’s not what she appears to be and what happens in Vegas follows Lucky back home with unimaginable consequences.
While Lucky is away, Brandon and Nick foil an attempt to assassinate a pretty private eye and her sweet sister. Together with Sam and his best SEAL buddies, Jax and Noah, they vow to bring the ringleader to justice and rid their town of the criminals. But nothing goes according to plan, and the men must fight Mother Nature, a murderer, and the local law enforcement. Not to mention that the new secretary is definitely hiding something.
When and why did you start writing?
As soon as I learned to write! All the stories I was told, and then began to read, weren’t finished in my mind. I continued them with my own imagination. As I grew and began to realize the world around me wasn’t made of fairytales, I incorporated solutions to the problems my fictional heroes and heroines faced in a need to escape from my own fears and demons.
What inspires your writing?
I find inspiration in everyday life. I enjoy music and television, but to sit quietly and “people watch” is probably my favorite way to be inspired. Not to worry, I’m not a creeper or a peeper! But the body language of ordinary folks at lunch or dinner, with friends or alone, fascinates me. And then the facial expressions and auras…well, I could write pages on how that inspires my creative mind.
What has been your worst moment as a writer?
To be truthful, my worst was also my best. That moment, right before you hit publish and send your work out into the world, is scary as hell. Will readers enjoy it? Hate it? Social media has given voice to the people and the people are using it. It’s very daunting. But on the other hand, the fact that I did this; I created something that I feel is good enough to share with total strangers in the hope that they will love it as much as I do; or at least like it enough not to trash it all over the internet! That, to me is an amazing feeling, close to when your child sets on in the world – you are so proud and yet terrified for them.
Do you have any writing rituals to get you in the mood for writing?
If I need inspiration, I go for a walk around town or help with a scene, I listen to music and dance. But to actually write, it’s classical music, coffee and/or lemon water. Oh, and always popcorn!
If you could, what would you go back and tell yourself as a writer starting out?
Take a few courses in advertising, and marketing!! I know nothing and in the beginning, it was like swimming in mud. Start that fan base early by connecting in reader groups, or chat forums.
What do you believe make for great writing?
Oh, I think you can write about anything if you are passionate about it! Now, it’s up to the reader to decide if it’s worth their time (that’s where the marketing comes in- sigh). Look at The Walking Dead – who knew a bunch of zombies roaming the earth would be such a hit?
How do you measure success as a writer?
By hitting the “publish” button. And then seeing that first sale. I love knowing that someone, somewhere is reading my book.
What’s your biggest fear as a writer?
That one day I’ll have nothing left to write. Nothing to inspire me. That is terrifying to a creative person.
Describe your latest book to our readers
Oh my! I have so much in the works right now, I’m not sure where to begin. Book six in my Tempered Steel Series has just been released. Cold as Ice is a romantic suspense with a bit of Domination in the mix. Nick Coalson is determined to make Rebecca Morgan his sexual submissive, but she’s holding out for more than just a D/s relationship. She wants forever.
Then there is my erotic trilogy, Lustful. Book One, Lustful Letters, is out now and I’m working on Book Two, Lustful Lies.
And I’m collaborating on a YA series with another author as well as working on an erotic discovery series entitled “The Academy.”
Oh, and lastly, I’ve written a few paranormal romances that I’m itching to finish!
What would you like readers to take away from your writing?
Hope. That no matter how bad it may seem in life, there is always hope. That love doesn’t just happen; we work at it, but with the hope of a forever kind of love.
Do you have any tips for aspiring writers?
Do your homework. Readers come from all walks of life and have a vast knowledge of any given topic. And personally, if a hero is described as a blue-eyed blonde Adonis, don’t make him a swarthy dark-eyed pirate on the cover. Readers REALLY notice that!
What’s next for you?
In addition to the works in progress I mentioned above, I’d like to do a historical romance featuring women in powerful positions.
And a cookbook! I love sharing recipes with my readers and they asked me to do one!
