Hi! I’m GC Rakestraw.
I’ve spent my entire career in the entertainment industry. I have entertained audiences of all ages by producing programming for companies including Disney, HGTV, Travel Channel, Animal Planet, and Turner Broadcasting. “Saving Belzadar“, my first book, gave me the opportunity to delve into the imagination of middle-grade readers. It was fun to create a whole new world filled with humorous, heroic, and dangerous creatures.
Have you always wanted to be a writer?
Yes! There are no limits when writing. I can dive in and let my imagination run wild.
Tell us about your book, and the story behind writing it
The book, “Saving Belzadar“, is an adventure story about an ordinary boy (Alexander) and his sassy, silly Elfcat (Purgle) who unexpectedly go on a perilous journey in order to save their kingdom.
Using a fantasy backdrop, I wrote the book to teach kids how to face challenges. Though the book is action-packed, at the heart of the story, the protagonist showcases traits like compassion and courage. I really wanted kids to relate to an unlikely hero who takes risks by thinking through problems to overcome seemingly impossible challenges.
What’s the biggest challenge about being a writer?
Time. It can be difficult to find time to write when it is not your full-time job. However, I make it a point to write everyday– even if it’s only for a few minutes.
Do you have a specific writing space?
As long as I have my iPad and Zagg Bluetooth keyboard, I can write anywhere…as long as it’s quiet.
What’s your number one piece of writing advice?
Have faith. You have to believe in your story and have faith in what you’re writing.
What books do you currently have on your bedside table?
Health books to keep my body strong, spiritual books to keep my mind strong, my husband’s notes of encouragement, and my father’s book…”Hiking For Fun and Pain“. :)
Who have been your biggest writing influences and why?
Of course, there are many great stories that moved me as a child (“Wizard of Oz“, “The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe“). My motivation for writing this book was to give something back to today’s children.
How do you market your writing?
Social media is the best thing that ever happened to writers. Now more than ever, we can get our messaging out without having to take out a second mortgage.
Lastly, something fun. What’s something our readers might not know about you?
I have an Emmy for one of the show’s I produced.
