I’m K. K. Watson. I am an independent author who three and a half years ago began writing my first book, Tempting Fate.
Tempting Fate is a Paranormal/Fantasy/Romance novel which is the first in the series The Dark Races. It was released in May of 2015. The second book in the series, Chasing Fate, was released June 1, 2016.
What inspires your writing?
My full time day job is very technical in the environmental field and in my spare time, I love to read. I fell in love with the genre, and one day decided to try my hand at writing as a creative outlet. My books just kind of evolved from there.
How would you define creativity?
The definition of creativity is the state or quality of being creative. But I think the Disney quote sums it up for me. “If you can dream it, you can do it.”
Do you have any writing rituals to get you in the mood for writing?
Whenever I have down time, or inspiration strikes me, I just grab a pen and paper, sit down and start writing. Usually, I jot down ideas, or broad statements of where I want the story to go, then I just fill in the details later as I type them or as they come to me. Both books started on legal pads with dozens of sticky notes attached as the ideas came to me. I guess I’m not much of a traditionalist as I don’t outline or even have a specific destination for where the story is going to end up. Often, the path takes several twists and turns, even a few u-turns before I get to where I’m going.
If you could, what would you go back and tell yourself as a writer starting out?
If I could go back, I would have started this journey a lot earlier than I did. As I am relatively new to this, it has been a learning experience. My husband and I joke that it is like putting together a jigsaw puzzle but only getting a new piece of the puzzle every few days.
What do you believe make for great writing?
I believe that you should write what you love to read. If you don’t love what you are writing, neither will your readers. If you’re not lying awake at night thinking about your story, neither will your readers. Some of my favorite books have been those that I would finally get to a stopping point, then wake up in the middle of the night having to pick it up and start reading again.
Which writers have influenced your writing?
The Harry Potter books were like that for me. I read them as an adult and they kept me so captivated, I couldn’t put them down. Steig Larsson, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was another series that I loved. Anne Rice, Karen Marie Moning, George R. R. Martin. I love to read series and will often binge read an entire series. One that I really love right now is A Shade of Vampire by Bella Forrest. I also love the Cal Leandros series by Rob Thurman.
How do you measure success as a writer?
To me being a successful writer is getting your work out there and people actually reading it. To do that you are putting a piece of your soul out there. My biggest fear is that nobody will ever read it or want to read it.
Have you ever hated something you wrote?
I hated my first draft of Tempting Fate. Halfway through the manuscript I shredded it and started over. After that, it got easier. Once I figured out the stream of consciousness thing and didn’t try to force it, it flowed much better.
Describe your latest book to our readers
Tempting Fate is kind of a coming of age story about Elena Kelley, a girl next door who learns that she is next in line to the Fae crown. Her entire life has been a lie and she has to figure out how to stay alive and to fulfill her destiny of uniting all of the Dark Races. The Dark Races are Fae, Demons, Sorcerers, Vampires and Werewolves. Not an easy task. The second book, Chasing Fate, picks up a year after Tempting Fate ends. The story focuses on Two of the friends Elena meets along the way. A Witch, Raevyn Thorn, and Vampire Mateo Reyes. They are key in helping Elena to fulfill her destiny. I am currently working on Escaping Fate, which picks up where Chasing Fate left off, and is the story of Raevyn’s sister, Trinity Thorn.
What’s next for you?
I plan to keep the series going as long as the story is good and I can keep it enjoyable. I’m lucky that I am independent and can do it at my own pace. Not having deadlines or someone to answer to is nice. It also has its drawbacks. Not having a publisher means that I have to do everything myself. Including marketing. But it is a journey and what does not kill us only makes us stronger. I think it’s great that anyone can put out a book or an album or whatever it is that they love to do. With today’s technology, anyone can easily put themselves out there.

My name is Elena Kelley. A few days ago, on my twenty-fifth birthday, a strange creature pulled me through an enchanted mirror, and onto a beach in the Fae Realm, where a Druid Sorcerer saved my life. Turns out, I’m the next in line to the Light Fae crown, and my fate is to unite the Dark Races.
Up until now, my entire life has been a lie. Oblivious to what I am, I’ve lived as a human, hidden from the supernatural world, cloaked by a Sorcerer’s spell. That spell is gone now, my powers are intensifying, and my life is in danger.
My new best friend is a Demon, and I’m meeting Vampires in bars. Somehow, I have to come to terms with what I am, and learn to fight in order to save myself as well as the ones I love.
