Book Review: Black Bullet By L.D Rose

Black Bullet is a dark, vampire romance written by L.D Rose in 2016, the second book in The Order of the Senary series.

This thrilling adventure follows Johnathan Kerr, a fledgeling vampire living in the midst of a war, dealing with his own tortured soul. From an outsider’s perspective, Johnathan appears to be a traitor to his kind. Johnathan is a former Marine and FBI agent turned vampire but he uses his skill to slay his own kind. Working with hybrids, a group of government-funded vampire hunters, he spends his time trying to push back the invasion of vampires in New York. After two years as a vampire, his life is transformed again when he meets half-vampire hybrid Lawan Knight. She trusts no one after the tortured existence he lived because of a group of vampires, now she is out for revenge. They both intrigue and confuse each other and as the world around them grows darker and more fraught with danger, they are drawn closer together.

A fantastic strength in this novel is Rose’s ability to create history and powers in her vampire kingdom. The different divisions and groups create an interesting political battle within the vampire community. The fact that in her world vampires are taking over and the government in actively trying to push back the onslaught is an interesting take on the classic vampire romance novel that has become so popular. I greatly enjoy the nicknames, families, blood types, and abilities that make the world come to life and feel real and natural despite being paranormal.

The relationships that Johnathan has with his family, both blood related and chosen family, give him and the book something to route for. Johnathan’s relationship with Lawan is a key focus of the book and their relationship is interesting and grows at a good and natural rate. That being said, it is the relationships he has with his housemates that really stand out. First, Rose creates a history that is slowly unfolded with how each of these people met. Their closeness is immediately visible with the personal dialogue between old friends. Giving Johnathan these people give him the humanity he is striving to hold onto, despite most of them not being truly human themselves.

This book was a first-place winner of The Paranormal Romance Guild’s 2016 Reader’s Choice Award for Paranormal Horror. Author Rose is a neurotic physician and a writer. She specializes in paranormal romance and urban fantasy. This is the second book in her series, in it, he is able to go back to old characters while focusing on new ones. While reading both books give further background into the world, to read the story itself, it is not necessary to read the first book. The first book is called Releasing the Demons and was published in 2015. Rose’s writing style is enjoyable and intriguing. I am excited to see more from this author and hopefully from this creative world and moving characters.

By L.D Rose

Fledgling vampire Jonathan Kerr has just met his match.

Not even his past life as a former marine and FBI agent could prepare him for the battle against the monster inside him, struggling to take hold. After an old nemesis of the Senary surfaces in Brooklyn, unleashing chaos and terror in the battered borough, Jon sets out to take him down. Instead, he ends up with far more than he bargained for when he clashes with the beautiful half-vampire hybrid, Lawan Knight.

After escaping near death and suffering unspeakable horror at the hands of vampires, Lawan trusts no one, regardless of species. In between bouts of drunken stupor, her only goal is to exterminate all those who’ve wronged her, including every member of Jon’s vampire bloodline. But Jon’s soulful eyes and quick smile crawls under her skin, transforming her black and white world into a hazy shade of gray.

As the days rapidly grow darker, Jon and Lawan turn to one another, but their inner demons threaten to tear them apart. The only way either of them will survive is if they overcome their greatest fear—Love.
