Book Review: Soul Meaning by A.D. Starrling

A.D. Starrling Book Review Soul Meaning

A.D. Starrling Book Review Soul Meaning“My name is Lucas Soul. Today, I died again. This is my fifteenth death in the last four hundred and fifty years.”

What a way to start a novel! From its first words, A.D. Starrling’s Soul Meaning had me hooked and be it a little jealous that I couldn’t think of a beginning that enticing.

Now, I’m not normally a person that’s a huge fan of novels with supernatural elements. I am however, a huge fan of action packed thrillers. Add in an audiobook form that I can take on the run and you my friend have got a win-win situation.

Soul Meaning follows the story of Lucas Soul an outcast of two immortal societies, the Bastians and Crovirs. A halfbreed of the two races, the result of his parent forbidden love which is strictly forbidden by both houses, which leaves him on the run from ‘The Hunters’.

If you’re anything like me, as soon as you heard the immortal part you thought, “Oh no, another Twilight spin-off”.

Let me stop you there. This novel is a refreshing take on the supernatural novel with an immortal character like any other I can think of in recent fiction.

No cliche vampires or hunky werewolves here.

The story kicks off after years of quiet with Lucas’ fifteenth death. A catalyst that sends Lucas and his business partner and friend Reid Hasley, a former US Marine on a chase throughout Europe searching for answers. The plot nicely weaves in the backstory of Lucas along with the lore of the immortal societies. Action packs scenes push the plot along as Lucas unveils shocking secrets and brings him face to face with his past and stop another war of the immortal that could affect all of mankind.

With a plot that is reminiscent of a crime noir and spy thriller a plot pace that almost leaves you short of breath. I found myself suddenly standing in my garden, shovel in hand with Jen, my fiancée,  shouting across the yard at me wondering what the hell I was doing. And isn’t that the point of a good novel, to lose yourself in that fictional world. To become so involved with the characters that you just want to plough through the chapters to find out what happens next.

A.D. Starrling has got all the things she needs to right. The plot is brilliant and why some points seemed a little convenient and only there to push the story along, it can be forgiven as you loose yourself in the fact paced action with a katana-wielding hero. What’s not to love?

I’d highly recommend this book to anyone looking for an action-packed supernatural thriller.
