Published in 1971 by author William Peter Blatty, this novel is often considered one of the most terrifying books ever written. It is about an 11-year-old girl named Regan who is the daughter of a movie actress in Washington D.C. Regan is possessed by a demon and must rely on a small group of individuals who are overwhelmed but determined in their mission to save her from a terrifying fate. This story is based on the true events of a child who was thought to be possessed in the 1940s.

It is a hypnotic, shocking and chilling story filled with love and death. This book is at the forefront of vampire novels and was published in 1976.

 House of Leaves 

By Mark Z. Danielewski

This book was published in the year 2000 and was written by Mark Z. Danielewski. This story is of a family that moves into a new house. But before long the family realized that their house is changing, hallways and doors shifting and appearing. Narrated by a blind old man, a young apprentice working in a tattoo shop, and a mad woman haunting an Ohio institute. This dark tale is a horrifying must read.

 Heart-Shaped Box 

By Joe Hill

Judas Coyne is a self-absorbed, aging rock star who has a thing for the macabre. He finds out that an online auction is selling a ghost, which he immediately purchases. He receives a black, heart-shaped box with the suit of a dead man but also his vengeance-obsessed spirit. The ghost turned out to be the stepfather of a groupie of Coyne’s who committed suicide after Coyne used her and threw her away. Now the ghost is about for revenge against Coyne. Written by Joe Hill, this book was published in 2007.
