They are the tales of men, women, and children dealing with terrifying mysteries that could cost them their lives.

Our heroine is an orphaned lady’s maid who is astonished when she is swept off her feet by a rich widower who asks her to marry him. Everything seems to be a dream come true until she arrives at his country estate. His late wife’s shadow seems to be casting darkness over everything that surrounds her and she can feel the evil lingering inside the house. She finds that her very life is in danger. This novel was written in 1938 by Daphne du Maurier.

The Godfather

By Mario Puzo

Written by Mario Puzo in 1969, this story is about the world of the mafia. The Corleones family and the power, legacy, honor and violence that comes with being a part of the renowned family. A fight between five of the largest and most dangerous mob families in New York. When Don Vito Carlene is shot, his sons, Sanction and Michael must take over the family business. Throughout the book we are able to see the life of Vito from childhood to adulthood, spanning from 1945 to 1955.

In Cold Blood

By Truman Capote

On November 15th of 1959, four members of the Clutter family are savagely murdered in their small town of Holcomb. There are very few clues, just the horrifying aftermath of the murder scene where the four victims have gunshot wounds from a shotgun blast merely inches away from their faces. Without even a motive to go off of, the book shows the reconstruction ton of the murders and the investigation that led the execution of the murderers. This novel was written by Truman Capote in 1965.

The Firm

By John Grisham

John Grisham wrote and published this book in 1991. The book is about Mitch McDeere, a young, intelligent and ambitious man who gets a job at a law firm call Bending, Lambert, & Locke. The job seems perfect and he is in his way to money and power. But Mitch beings to notice that he is being spied on. It seems that the company is listening to his phone calls and soon the FBI wants to speak to him. The money and power Mitch wanted my come with a price, perhaps even his own life.


The Lovely Bones

By Alice Sebold

Published in 2002 and written by Alice Sebold, The Lovely Bones is the story of a family devastated by a gruesome murder. Susie Salmon describes her murder to the reader, telling of the horrifying event. But while the reader is given this information, Susie’s family is still left in the dark. Susie gold’s on from going to the calm version of heaven she is offered and she watches her family and friends struggle to deal with her death. This story is dark and moving as we get to see another side of murder, the victims.
