thisiswriting.com created this Creative Writing Scholarship to help serve students aspiring to become the next best-selling author. Our hope is that this scholarship will give the winners and runners up the confidence to pursue a career as a writer.

Scott Mullins

Scott Mullins is the founder of thisiswriting.com. When he’s not working on the site he spends his time working as a freelance digital content manger for a startup in Australia. 

Scott is an aspiring author still struggling to finish his novel while finding every excuse to procrastinate on it. He writes thrillers that focus on the darker side of life.

Arthur McMahon

​Arthur McMahon is an independent author of fiction and non-fiction, publisher, and host of the Paracosms podcast.

Carolyn Decker

Carolyn Decker is the co-founder of the writing workshop and podcast Endless Beautiful. Poet and wetland biologist, she spends her favorite days outside asking plants about who they are and where they live. She studied environmental science at Wheaton College and spent a year as a Watson Fellow investigating the relationships between nature conservation and creative writing. Endless Beautiful enables her to be a careful listener and thoughtful writer.

Lucas Pralle

Lucas Pralle is the co-founder of Endless Beautiful – a writing workshop and podcast. He spent several years in the United States Marine Corps as an infantryman before studying English and creative writing at Edgewood College. After graduating, Lucas went on to teach English in Suzhou, China. He currently resides in Providence, Rhode Island. He’s the writer and producer of the serialized audiobook, Inner Harsh. Lucas, or Oracle in some circles, also co-hosts two other podcasts, The Red Eye Report and Worm Island

Josiah Davis

​Josiah Davis is the founder and owner of JD Book Services, as well as Karen’s Book Barn in La Grange, KY. He started as a professional editor three years ago and now edits as a full-time job, specializing in Fantasy and Sci-Fi novels for indie/self-published authors. Over the past three years, Josiah has edited over forty-five published novels, ranging from Fantasy, to Non-Fiction, to Horror, to Romance.

E. Paige Burks, the author of The Heart of the Guardian, is a graduate of Texas A&M University with a degree in Agricultural Communication and Journalism.

Her book, Return to Royalty, won the 2016 Author U Draft to Dream Award in the Young Adult category and has been nominated for other awards, including the USA Best Book Awards, International Book Awards, and Dan Poynter Global Ebook Awards.

When she is not writing fantasy and love stories, she enjoys Mexican food, singing out loud, cuddling with her cats, and taking long naps. She also has started her own editing and consulting company called Infinity Flower Publishing, LLC, and she has helped to publish several children’s books.

The Details

  • Submit a 2000 – 5000 word fiction short story
  • Please include a title. This will not count towards your word count.
  • Entries must be submitted online by midnight Eastern Time 16th August 2017.
  • Only online entries will be accepted.
  • Entry is free. Limit one entry per person.
  • Entry must be original and unpublished.
  • Entries will be judged on originality, creativity, quality, spelling, and grammar.
  • When submitting your entry you must include your student number, university and course title.
  • All entries will be published in a short story collection. By submitting your work you are agreeing to have your work published if selected as one of the winners.
  • All applicants must be currently enrolled full-time in an accredited UK, US, Canadian, Australian or New Zealand Tertiary Education Institution.
  • The scholarship is open to Undergraduate, Masters, Doctorate or Post-Graduate students studying Creative Writing, Literature or equivalent degree.
  • Application Period: 16th June 2017 to 16th August 2017. The winners will be announced 16th September 2017.

Please include the required materials as the initial pages of your manuscript file. Submissions should follow these formatting guidelines: twelve-point font, double-spaced text, numbered pages. Note that we only accept PDF or Word files (.doc and .docx).

Required details: Full Name, University, Course Name, Student ID, Story Title.

These details will be used to confirm current enrollment in a creative writing course in the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand or Canada.
